From banquets to the running of the bulls
Fiestas are basically huge parties and we mean huge. They involve the entire populations of villages and towns, including all the expats in the area.
In Orba the fiestas are the highlights of the village year. Have a look at our Fiesta Calendar to see what’s happening, when and where:
Fiesta Calendar:
January
The year starts on the evening of 5th, known here as Three Kings Day. The Kings arrive on horseback and give presents to the children of the village at the plaza.
April
Take a trip to Alcoy for The Moors and Christians Fiesta. They hold the biggest processions of their kind in Spain and the flamboyant mock battles, music and amazing fireworks go on through the night.
May
Go to Jávea for the Fiesta of Jesus Nazareno. There’ll be dancing in the street, and bull running in the Plaza del Convento.
One of the biggest fiestas is over a 4-day weekend in the second week of May. Over the four days there are childrens’ activities, marching bands, processions, food in the street and noisy fireworks.
There are grand dances on most nights including the Great Dance in the Square with the Patrullaorchestra.
June
Snorting bulls thunder through Orba’s streets in the running of the bulls this month.
Assuming you’re not run over, you may also appreciate the paella cooking competitions, bike races round the village and dressed floats on the parade, ending with music from the fantastic Orba Band.
July
This month brings the most famous celebration in the area – Bous a la Mar, Bulls in the Sea at Dénia. This fiesta commemorates the Sacred Blood of Christ in a most unusual way.
Thousands of people come from far and wide to experience this exuberant extravaganza. The Fiesta is a week of processions, carriage parades, bonfires and fireworks.
The festival ends with the running of the bulls down the main street, Marqués de Campo. They are run into the sea, often followed by the runners. It’s a dramatic and wholly Spanish fiesta!
August
The Moors and Christian’s pageants in Dénia are held in honour of St Roch. This colourful, flamboyant pageant ends with a grand fight between the two protagonists high on the hill in the castle.
